The Resources Skills and Employment Plan was developed to respond to strong growth in the resources sector with predictions of 40,000 jobs being created by 2020, and to maximise opportunities for Queenslanders to participate in this resources sector growth.

Work for Queensland Summit
On Tuesday 16 August 2011, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh hosted the Work for Queensland Summit on the Gold Coast. The summit brought together key resource industry executives, the mayors of the Gold Coast City Council and Sunshine Coast, Whitsundays, Cairns and the Fraser Coast Regional Councils and key Queensland and Australian Government stakeholders.
The purpose of the summit was to discuss ways to ensure the job opportunities from the resources boom are maximised and enjoyed by as many Queenslanders as possible.
A second Work for Queensland Summit was held on 14 December 2011 in Brisbane. The Summit led to the endorsement of the Resources Skills and Employment Plan by resources industry representatives and senior Australian and Queensland Government officers. The Plan articulates priority demand occupations for the resources sector and skilling and employment strategies to meet this demand.

Work for Queensland Mining and Gas Jobs Expos
A key action from the summit was agreement to host a series of Work for Queensland Mining and Gas Jobs Expos.
Five jobs expos were held in regional locations across Queensland in October and early November 2011 to provide jobseekers with the opportunity to find out about the range of jobs and careers available in the resources sector in Queensland.
With more that 24,000 people attending the first series of expos, a second series was held in South East Queensland in February 2012.

Work for Queensland - Resources 101
The TAFE Queensland Resources 101 pre-employment program assists eligible Queensland jobseekers with employment opportunities in the resources sector.
The program provides an introduction to the resources sector, base level engineering skills to increase employment opportunities and a general skill set to support pathway to further training and/or employment.
The program consists of 12 units and is run three days per week for five weeks in key centres across Queensland.
